What are the signs and symptoms of Mesothelioma?

During the early stages of the disease, the cancer presents as small lumps in the lining of the lungs and does not show on scans or x-rays. At this early stage, the disease is unlikely to cause any symptoms.

As it progresses, mesothelioma usually causes general symptoms:

  • tiredness
  • sweating
  • loss of appetite, and
  • weight loss

As the disease progresses further, symptoms become apparent such as:

  • chest pain, and
  • shortness of breath

Mr M was exposed to asbestos dust and fibres during his employment with his local City Council during removal works performed in the late 60s and early 70s. Asbestos had been removed from boilers and pipe work in the boiler room at a local school and Mr M was present during the works. The work also involved removing old paintwork covered with asbestos and also the asbestos surrounding the old boiler. Mr M was able to see dust in the air when the asbestos was being stripped off. He was not warned to avoid the area, nor was he provided with any respiratory protection whatsoever.

Almost 40 years later, Mr M starting experiencing severe shortness of breath and chest pains. He consulted his GP who referred him to a chest physician who diagnosed him with mesothelioma. Sadly, Mr M’s health deteriorated very rapidly and he passed away as a result of the disease within 3 months of his diagnosis.

Mr M’s son and personal representative to his estate sought to bring a claim for compensation on behalf of his late father. Simpson Millar LLP secured £50,000 in compensation for Mr M’s family.

Often due to a combination of factors:

  • the lining of the lung thickens and can act like a rind around the lung that restricts lung movement and prevent lung expansion
  • the disease can extend into the tissues around the lung, including nerves and bone, and this can cause severe pain
  • fluid may also accumulate around the lung which can restrict lung expansion

If you have concerns that you may be suffering from mesothelioma, or you have experienced some or all of the symptoms above, you should seek medical advice immediately. You should consult with your GP who will refer you to a specialist, if appropriate, who will be able to advise you on a treatment programme.
