Janet joined Simpson Millar in January 2013 as Head of the Care Homes Recovery Department working in Leeds and Gateshead.
Janet is a Solicitor with over 30 years' experience in Social Welfare Law and Welfare Benefits. She is also a personal injury lawyer dealing primarily with Industrial Disease claims.
Upon leaving school Janet worked for the Department for Work and Pensions for 10 years in local Social Security offices and then as a Welfare Rights Advisor.
In 1988 she joined the legal profession where she trained as a Legal Executive with Watson Burton Solicitors in Newcastle upon Tyne dealing with Industrial Deafness claims for mineworkers.
She then continued her work as a Trade Union Lawyer with Browell Smith & Co in Newcastle and returned to Northumbria University in order to qualify as a Solicitor in 2003.
Janet then became a Partner with Browell Smith & Co and successfully managed a large Department which handled over 30,000 claims for the NUM for mineworkers suffering from respiratory disease.
Janet has always maintained her interest in Social Welfare Law and has acted as an advisor for both the NUM and GMB Unions in relation to Welfare Benefits.
In more recent years she has also become a specialist in pursuing applications for NHS Continuing Healthcare and has secured substantial refunds of fees from the NHS.
Janet has a particular interest in this area of Law as her own father suffers with Alzheimers and she is fully aware of the challenges faced by families in accessing care and support for long term care.
At home in County Durham, Janet is an active member of the Scout Association and a Cub leader working with children between the ages of 8 and 11.
She also sings in a choir at the Sage, Gateshead and enjoys both classical music and musical theatre.
