Simpson Millar LLP - CWUHA Convoy Heads to Moldova
This September, James Urquhart, our solicitor specialising in NHS Continuing Healthcare Claims,
is pleased to be joining the Communication Workers Union Humanitarian Aid (CWUHA) Convoy in
opening an activity centre for children with learning disabilities in Moldova.
He will be accompanied by Julie Dowd from Debt Free Direct and together they have been fundraising since Christmas 2014 in preparation for this fantastic cause.
Simpson Millar LLP actively supports the CWUHA charity and regularly participates in convoys all over the world delivering aid directly
to the children that need it most.
This year’s destination: Moldova
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the CWUHA, and James and Julie are proud
to be taking part in an ambitious project transforming a rundown school in Moldova,
the Phoenix Centre, into an activity centre for children and teenagers with disabilities.
Moldova is one of the poorest countries in Europe, and many families with disabled children can't afford to access the care and support they need to thrive.
The Phoenix Centre is set to be kitted out with much needed equipment and facilities such as:
The project hopes to improve the lives of around 400 children each year.
- physiotherapy rooms
- massage therapy
- sensory equipment
- language therapy
The Work So Far
The CWUHA have already seen success earlier this year with their first visit to Moldova in May.
They were able to track the renovation progress on the Phoenix centre, and delivered extra provisions to the Tony Hawks Centre for disabled children in Chisinau.
This included specialist sensory equipment, zimmer frames, and toys for the children. This aid will also be sent on to the Children's Ward at the Oncology Hospital in Chrisinau.
The previous visit to Moldova was supported by BT who provided communication handsets whilst Royal Mail and CWU branches provided the vehicles to make delivering aid possible.
Aid including clothes, bedding, food, pots and pans, microwaves and dinner sets for families were delivered both through visits to town halls and directly to family homes.
This year our volunteers will also be very privileged because they will be able to deliver much needed food,
clothes and home supplies directly to families before the harsh Moldavian winter sets in.
