Reports of Cryptosporidium at First Choice's Tenerife Holiday Village

One of the unfortunate holidaymakers has tested positive for Cryptosporidium, a bug associated with water that has been contaminated with human faeces. Others are now being tested.

Holiday Village Exclusive to First Choice

The Tenerife Holiday Village is sold exclusively by tour operator giant, First Choice, during summer months. The hotel has a buffet, themed restaurants, and also boasts a range of facilities including stage, swimming, and football academies.

This is not the first time a Cryptosporidium illness has been associated with a First Choice Holiday Village, in Summer 2010 and 2012 Simpson Millar represented people that suffered the same illness at the Red Sea Holiday Village in Egypt. Again in 2013 we represented clients that suffered from the bug at the Lanzarote Holiday Village.

Cryptosporidium outbreaks involving UK holidaymakers are typically associated with swimming pools that have been exposed to faecal contamination incidents. Other causes are contaminated food and water – including ice.

Know The Symptoms

The symptoms are typical of those associated with traveller's diarrhoea, including vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach cramps, and fever.

The bug itself is incredibly difficult to kill – unlike other bugs that can be removed by proper by use of chemicals used in the treatment of water such as chlorine. In the event of a pool being exposed to a contamination incident it will need to be closed while the pool is properly backwashed.

Holidaymakers that think they might have contracted Cryptosporidium are advised to do the following:

  1. Seek medical attention from a doctor or clinic if still in resort
  2. Upon returning to the UK, contact your GP who can arrange for a stool sample to be tested
  3. Keep all documentation relating to the illness including receipts, medication packets etc.
  4. Obtain details of all other clients that experiences similar illness

Those that have experienced illness for 3 days or more are may be well advised to contact Simpson Millar's Holliday Team, particularly if they want to help other customers, or are interested in joining a group action against First Choice.

It is worth noting, if you have suffered illness you are advised to speak to us FIRST, before talking to your tour operator - as doing so may harm your entitlement to compensation.
