Slips, trips and falls in the workplace – latest figures revealed
-
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has revealed the latest shocking figures detailing people injured by slips, trips and falls in their workplace over 2008-2009.
In 2009, 40 workers across all sectors had fatal accidents in their workplace, and 10 of those were in the building, construction and maintenance sector.
Also in this sector there were 1,769 major slip, trip and fall injuries and also 2,162 workers hurt in the workplace and needing more than 3 days off work because of their slip, trip or fall.
Accidents in the workplace cost employers £millions in lost working days alone. And that’s before workers claim compensation for their slip, trip or fall in the workplace that could – and should – have been preventable.
The HSE has launched a compelling new 'Shattered Lives' advertising campaign highlighting the very serious issue of slips, trips and falls in the workplace. If you are injured in your workplace you may be able to claim compensation.
The HSE has also found that slips and trips are the most common cause of workplace injury in the UK, and falling from height is the most common cause of fatal injury at work.
Across all sectors more than 15,000 workers suffered an injury at work, and more than 30,000 needed to take time off due to their slip, trip or fall at work. The construction industry is well known for having a high number of slip, trip and falls incidents and the HSE has now set up its new campaign website advising companies how to reduce the risk of slips, trips and falls in the workplace.
Peter Brown, head of the HSE’s work and environment division, said "These figures highlight the very real and serious nature of preventable slip, trip and fall incidents in the workplace."
