Lung cancer patients face inadequate treatment
-
A report carried out by leading lung cancer experts, the UK Lung Cancer Care Coalition has stated that UK care is considerably lacking to that of Europe.
The report states that:
- Many patients are not getting treatment due to staff shortages
- In some areas of the UK only 10% receiving any kind of treatment with the national average being on 51%
- The problems in care are due to their only being 44 full time surgeons to assist 240 separate teams in the UK
The coalition wants the national target to be increased to 70% and believes that by 2020 survival rates could be doubled if care for lung cancer patients is made a priority.
A Department of Health spokesman said: "We know there is more to do on lung cancer. That is why we recently re-convened the Lung Cancer and Mesothelioma Advisory Group to look at the issues raised in this review, including access to surgery."
Mesothelioma is a cancer of the lung which is often caused by exposure to asbestos. Sadly many people have asbestos related illness due to exposure in their workplace and it is only hoped that this report prompts action to be taken for suffers of lung cancer to increase survival rates.
