Former electrician lobby’s the government for asbestos disease research centre
John Bindley a former electrician who was diagnosed with asbestosis three years ago has asked the British Government to create a centre committed to researching and finding treatments for asbestos related diseases.

Asbestos which is a mineral found naturally in the environment was used throughout most the 20th century as a construction material. It is said that use of asbestos was subject to a major cover up by corporations and government officials who were well aware of its toxic quantities following evidence which placed asbestos in such a negative light but was disregarded and hidden. As a result of the use of this highly toxic material people all over the world are suffering with the consequences of exposure to asbestos.

Following his diagnosis Mr Bindley has been campaigning for more research into asbestos conditions and treatment for the Derbyshire Asbestos Support Team.

Asbestosis is one of a number of asbestos related conditions. For further information on asbestos conditions, please see the asbestos pages on our website. The work of Mr Bindley and the Derbyshire Asbestos Support team can only be a benefit to those suffering with an asbestos condition. The Derbyshire Asbestos Support Team has already set up a petition to lobby the government for a research centre. Many are hopeful that this will help lead the way for a definitive change in the government’s stance towards victims of asbestos exposure.

One of the most serious conditions that is linked to asbestos exposure is Mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a form of asbestos lung cancer which is difficult to treat and diagnose. The prognosis is usually poor and sufferers are given and average survival rate of less than one year.

Action Mesothelioma Day was held on 27th February 2009. It is hoped that the publicity on this day has raised awareness of the dangers involved in asbestos exposure throughout the UK.

If you or a member of your family have been affected by an Asbestos related illness or disease you could be entitled to compensation. Call our Industrial Illness and Disease Team now on 0844 858 3600 or complete our online enquiry form.
