Pleural plaques compensation ruling due by end of January

A Bradford MP has revealed that a long-awaited decision on compensation rights for suffers of the asbestos related illness pleural plaques could be reached by the end of this month.
Anyone who suffers from pleural plaques are only too aware of the fact that they can be an early indicator of a fatal asbestos illness eg asbestosis or mesothelioma.
Pleural Plaques are the most common injury caused by exposure to asbestos. They appear as a white or yellow thickening on the pleura and are often found to be frequently bilateral (involving both lungs) and symmetric in shape and size. They usually occur particularly on the posterolateral chest wall between the 5th and 8th ribs, over the mediastinal pleura and on the dome of the diaphragm.
Pleural Plaques typically develops 20-30 years after exposure and appear more commonly if you have had exposure to asbestos heavily or over a long period of time. They develop in, as many as, 50% of asbestos exposed workers, but may also occur after low dose exposures.
The House of Lords ruling in November 2007 stated that sufferers of the disease could no longer claim compensation.
MPs and campaigners, including Bradford North Labour MP Terry Rooney, have repeatedly called for an announcement on the issue. He said: "We are determined to get justice for sufferers of pleural plaques. Hopefully we will receive a statement within the next 10 days and hopefully Jack Straw will announce the overturning of the Lords' decision."
