Some of Yorkshire's biggest sport and leisure teams will go head-to-head in a charity showdown at a race-meeting taking place at Doncaster later this month.

The Simpson Millar Day on Friday, June 29 will feature a mascot race, with Leeds United, Doncaster Rovers, Doncaster Racecourse and Sheffield Wednesday among the competitors helping to raise money for the Communication Workers Union Humanitarian Aid (CWUHA), a charity that aids vulnerable children in the UK and Europe including, Bulgaria, Ukraine and Moldova to name a few, and Just a Drop, which raises money to build wells, install boreholes and hand pumps, and carry out sanitation and health education programmes in some of the poorest parts of the developing world.
The meeting, sponsored by law firm Simpson Millar LLP, is set to attract thousands of racegoers gearing up for a big weekend at Town Moor, with the racecourse's Construction Index live music raceday headlined by cockney band Madness taking place the following evening. Visitors at the June 29 fixture will be treated to the charity mascot race first, where six teams will battle it out to pip their competitors to the post. An afternoon of horse racing will follow, with six races getting underway between 2pm and 5:20pm.
Simpson Millar's marketing director Caroline Kelly helped develop the mascot race concept. She said: "Horseracing is a fantastic day out but we wanted to team that with an eye-catching race in a bid to raise much needed funds for two very worthwhile charities. The response from sports clubs across the region has been amazing and we all can't wait to see who will be first across the finish line."
The raceday is part of a packed programme of summer events taking place at Doncaster Racecourse over the coming weeks.
Mark Spincer, managing director at Doncaster Racecourse, said: "The Simpson Millar Day will offer the usual great line up of horse racing, but with the addition of a real stand-out race that will help establish the racecourse as a great sporting organisation that really is ahead of the field. We'll of course have our money on the Doncaster Racecourse mascot!"
