Those of you aged between 40 and 74 may well have received a letter from your GP practice advising you that you are entitled to free NHS health checks.

People aged between 40 and 74 are eligible for a free NHS health check and the purpose of this is to allow them to live a longer and healthier life.
The NHS Health Check Programme aims to prevent heart disease/diabetes and other diseases such as kidney disease.
Persons within the age group who have not being diagnosed with one of these conditions will be involved once every 5 years to have a check to assess their risk of these conditions. They will also be given support and advice to help them reduce and manage that risk.
All GP practices now offer the NHS Health Check free of charge and are inviting local patients to attend.
If you do receive your invitation it is important that you take up the offer for this free NHS health check.
As you know, no one knows what’s going to happen tomorrow and everyone is potentially at risk of developing heart disease/diabetes and kidney disease.
The good news is that these conditions can be prevented but obviously it is essential to have a healthier life style.
The health check will consist of a 30-minute consultation where upon the patient will be asked some simple questions about their family history and the medication they are taking.
Key information such as their height, weight, age, sex and ethnicity will be recorded. Blood Pressure will be taken along with a sample of blood to check cholesterol and in some cases blood sugar levels.
After this, personalised advice on how to lower risk and maintain a healthy life style will follow.
If you have someone close to you that fits this age-range, then do advise them to take advantage of this free NHS health check, which is available at their GP practice.
