30-year-old man fights for life after vicious dog attack

A 30-year-old man was savaged by two dogs on Brighton beach on Friday morning (18/05/12) and is fighting for his life in hospital.
Claims for personal injury following a dog attack are becoming increasingly common and all victims of dog attacks may be entitled to claim compensation.
Compensation is paid if an owner is aware that their dog is aggressive and fails to control dogs which attack and cause injury. Compensation claims can cover not only injury, but also compensation for out of pocket expenses such as loss of earnings if the injured person is unable to work.
The unnamed victim of the latest reported attack was walking along the beach when a bull mastiff and Staffordshire bull terrier set upon him and continued to attack him even after he had lost consciousness.
The victim was severely bitten all over his body and police and paramedics were unable to reach him at first in case they were attacked by the dogs. An officer sustained hand and leg injuries at the scene as the police dog squad tried to rescue the victim and calm the dogs.
A witness said the dogs attacked the man while he was in the water. Jack Le-Flay, aged 20, said:
"I was returning home after a night out and saw the attack – we could see these two dogs dragging something out of the water.
"At first we thought it might have been a police training exercise or an old tyre, but we could see a leg. There was a lot of blood on the man – who was lying face down in the water.
"I have never seen a dog behave like that before – it was barbaric."
Detective Inspector Ian Still of Brighton CID said that the attack was “very nasty” and an investigation has been launched.
"We are still trying to work out why this incident has taken place," said DI Still. "The dogs were still aggressive when police arrived and officers weren’t able to approach the victim initially."
The victim of the dog attack is thought to be fighting for his life – he is currently in a critical but stable condition in the Royal Sussex County Hospital.
The dogs’ owner, a 40-year-old man, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of assault, possessing a knife and being in possession of class A drugs.
Dog owners should act responsibly at all times both for the welfare of others and their pets.
